Basilica of Bom Jesus- Churches of Goa

Basilica of Bom Jesus is a 400 year old church located in Old Goa which was the capital of Goa in the early days of Portuguese Rule.

Basilica of Bom Jesus is locally known as the Old Goa church and is famous because of Saint Francis Xavier. It is UNESCO approved World Heritage Monument.

As we step into the premises, the first thing we see is the cross decorated with floral garlands and lighted candles.

The word “Bom Jesus” means Infant Jesus.

The Structure looks absolutely Beautiful from outside.It is Built with red laterite Stones. Basilica of Bom Jesus is the best example of Baroque architecture in India.

The Construction of the church began in 1594 & was consecrated by Arch Bishop Dom Fr. Aleixo de Menezes in 1605.

The Giant Altar that we see on entering the church is speechless. The main altar is designed in Baroque style architecture, which is gilded & bears the statue of Ignatius of Loyola, onto which is the Solomonic Pillars on both sides, above which is the name of Jesus in the IHS monogram & the holy trinity. i.e. the father, son and the holy spirit.

To the right of the Altar, we can see the sacred relics of Saint Francis Xavier. It is said that St. Francis’s  Body is still as fresh as the day it was buried. That’s the reason it attracts thousands of tourists from all over the world.

It is believed that the Saint has miraculous power of healing. Every Ten Years the body of St. Francis Xavier is held for Public View, Which was last held at 2014.

As we move inside, the Interior of this Chapel is adorned with scenes from the life of the Saint Francis.

On moving further we can see stairs upward towards the Art Gallery.The Entry to Art Gallery cost Rs 5/-. Here we can see several Painting and statues related to St. Francis made by numerous artists.

Main Altar of Basilica 

After a short peep into the art gallery, we moved towards the interior courtyard of the church which has a beautiful garden. Walking through the corridor will take us to the sound and light show, which depicts the story of St. Francis Xavier in the form of Moving Statues and Lighting. It’s worth a watch. The show Cost Rs 30/-.

Towards the exit is a Beautiful Grotto of our lady of Bernadette decorated with Water fountain and rocks.


Basilica of Bom Jesus is a must visit place in Goa. This Church holds various Historic Relevance and is the oldest Church in India. The UNESCO World Heritage Monument is worth Watching.

    I and my friends visited Old Goa churches recently. We saw old Portuguese culture, father Francis body and peaceful environment around the church. There is a huge park where you can sit and relax. The Place was clean. I would like to visit this place again. We booked our package with the help of sea water sports travel. Staff was cooperative. Thanks to sea water sports for making our days memorable.
